You may be familiar with the practice of certain days in the calendar being set aside to commemorate or develop greater awareness and attention around a particular topic of global interest. Recently we had Mental Health Day, Peace One Day and Earth Day as examples.

In the case of the above examples, it is not just about setting a day aside to remember, it is about an evolution of our understanding that is designed to precipitate change for the good of all concerned.

Global Oneness Day is a yearly event that occurs on the 24th October each year which discusses the concept of oneness as it applies to you and the world, as well as how many entrepreneurs are applying this to their life and field of work influence.

The concept of oneness is something that does appear to have an obvious relevance to people’s lives, especially in a world which is heavily punctuated with survival, stress and conflict on an individual and collective level. So many people are absorbed with their own stuff and barely looking around to consider the wider impact of their lives.

This is even more reason to set aside time to understand how ‘oneness’ applies to individual and collective living, and how the wise application of what it truly means can inspire abundance in every level of life.

Oneness is about the connectedness of things and is relevant to business whether one is talking about building rapport and trust, or other aspects of doing business. To grasp and apply its implications is to equip you with the resourcefulness to combat isolation and a defragmented approach to life and business.

Business has traditionally advertised the merits of competition and dominating the marketplace in order to be profitable. I came from a service background of mental health nursing, and it was a shock to me to feel I had to promote and market aggressively in order to get a reasonable amount of the ‘pie of success’

What I have since gone on to discover is what Charles Haanel and Wallace Wattles, in their respective books, The Master Key System and The Science of Getting Rich, refer to as the connection between the creative mind and success.

I have found that when I have applied its teachings of delivering value, service, gratitude, mental imagery, efficient action in order to benefit mankind my results are significantly different and far more effortless. In fact many of these things I learned in the service industry and enjoyed huge success and reward without having to adopt an ‘aggressive me’ stance

Vocations such as nursing can teach business much about true profitability because of the underlying values base of purpose, care and love. These underpinning values is often given secondary or luxury consideration, rather than a more integral one. Some even ask ‘what has love got to do with business?’ We are missing out on wealth in the true sense of the word from my observations and discoveries.

Going back to The Master Key System by Charles Haanel he talks about being and doing with love and service for the good of mankind. Underlying these statements is the connection he talks about between us and the universe at large, which is spiritual [not religious] in nature

It seems to me that if we are going to thrive in life and work, we need to understand our core essence and how that connects to our source or Universal Intelligence so that we can draw on its power in a more effortless and integrated way to serve humankind while redressing the imbalance of an overly competitive approach.

There is so much more abundance to be experienced when we can truly help others through our life and work without manipulation.

I find the results to be more effortless, and my sense of wellbeing is not deferred to some achievement but is more engaged with the joy and process of my creativity. Money has flowed more easily when in this groove too.

Ultimately this is not something that can be done justice through mere words. It really is an experience that you need to give yourself in more scientific fashion in order to discover its truths and benefits for yourself.

The word ‘spiritual’ is a touchy subject for many people and one that causes much resistance when it comes to applying it to business because it is often associated with religion. Additionally, many entrepreneurs consider it irrelevant to business.

I find the opposite to be true. Not only has it been relevant for me. It is difficult to operate to my full potential without it. Whether we accept it or not we all have a spiritual dimension, just as we have a physical, mental and emotional dimension to us

In fact, science is constantly affirming now what so many spiritual commentaries have been stating for years through a more instinctive place. When you talk about a human being showing great spirit, you are acknowledging that part of you – the spiritual dimension

You only need to take a look at the work of organizations like HeartMath, to start to grasp the significance of the heart in daily living as well as how it can impact business.

Scientists are becoming more aware of the field of energy that encompasses the heart, likening it to another brain with even greater amplitude

When I refer to spiritual intelligence here I am not talking about religion. The two are not the same although they can overlap. James Twyman, author of The Moses Code offers a useful distinction when referring to this.

He summarises that many religious people tend to operate as if God is out there, as if heaven or hell is a place you go to after death, depending on how your life has been lived in accordance with religious rules, and that therefore God’s love is conditional.  

On the other hand he offers that spiritual people are not attached to a religious order and ‘know that there’s no separation between themselves and their Divine Source…that Jesus was correct when he said “The Kingdom of God is within you” and ‘know that God’s love is eternal and unconditional’ and that through this their soul’s potential is revealed.

To bring this down to earth, when you exercise such things as an open heart and engage your intuition, you are engaging your spirit, which has a great capacity to reveal your potential and utilize it for good. You may name this force, universal intelligence or higher power, or higher self. It doesn’t matter

The key is that the spiritual aspect of ourselves is not confined to our physical or mental plane and is able to glean far more information, knowledge and wisdom that lies off our conscious radar if we allow it freer reign.

I recall in my earlier business days how I defaulted to traditional business advice. Some it was sound and fundamental. Yet at some level I did not feel I was able to be my true creative self as so much was reduced to formulas which were supposedly designed to produce competitive edge, leading to more sales, more clients, and greater profitability. I struggled to integrate my spirituality into my work as it was often dismissed as irrelevant.

However my creativity was being stifled, and I eventually started to experience boredom, disappointment and disillusionment. It seemed that competition and creativity could not co-exist. Business did not feel so fun or fulfilling anymore.

I recall reading Gregg Braden’s book, The Divine Matrix, which bought quantum physics and spiritual principles together to demonstrate how to manifest according to your goals and dreams.

I also recall reading Neale Donald Walsch’s book ‘Conversations With God’ which demystified the religious connotations and explained things in more natural terms that make it accessible to everyone. No-one is excluded!!

Ironically when I sat still and sought answers during my own meditative experience, I came round full circle to putting creativity, fun and fulfillment at the forefront, blending them in with the best of the traditional taught principles. This is important as there are many spiritually inclined people that struggle to earn profitably in business. Integration is key.

When I let go of what was not serving me and found the courage to express all aspects of myself in the way I created valuable products and services, everything changed.

Now I often get approached to become involved in exciting and lucrative projects that combine fun and creativity while serving humanity at a deep level. Of course, not everything I am offered is right and I engage my heart and intuition in the process of becoming more wise and discerning as to what feels aligned with my core purpose.

This process I engaged with is something anyone can do but not everyone does. The act of simply becoming still, breathing deeply and asking questions with an open heart is invoking your spiritual intelligence. Add belief and faith in your vision and you are further realizing the power of your spirit. There’s nothing religious about that. It is simply a part of you waiting to be more fully engaged.

Maybe up till now, you have not fully engaged your spirit, and maybe now is an opportunity to do so. The following steps are simple, no cost and require only 7mins daily to activate your spiritual intelligence and/or give it freer reign.

  1. Ask an empowering question
  2. Sit still in a quiet place and breathe deeply
  3. Listen with an open heart, and let your intuition speak,
  4. Follow through

I have seen so much serendipity take place when I do this and it is exciting to say the least, and I shared some of these discoveries in my book Breaking Free.

In the last 2 years I have come across phrases and discussions about building a conscious business and often wondered about why that name arises in the first place. At first, it met with some humour on my part as I wondered what an unconscious business looked like?

Jokes aside it took me down a path of reflection about what I have experienced and found difficult at times in business, and how business should be, including where business has lost its way.

Certainly if you take a look at the economy in recent years, there are signs that the so-called traditional systems are showing signs of old structures with banking crises in Greece, Cyprus and Northern Rock [UK]

The attempted decentralisation of industries by Uber and Airbnb in transport and accommodation respectively further reflect that shift, as does the decentralisation of money via cryptocurrency and the blockchain.

However this is not just about the quest for autonomy, but an attempt to come up with different solutions that improve people’s lives, by giving them fairer and reasonable options, minus the bureaucracy that swallows up so much money

Traditional taught marketing practices appear to be labouring in bearing fruit and profits for so many. They are in a sea of businesses fighting for the attention of their prospects, needing to stand out in a meaningful and impactful way. Accompanying this is a feeling of confusion and clarity about the way forward.

The old adage that you need 7 marketing messages to ‘get through’ to potential prospects no longer works of its own accord due to the low level of ‘know’, like and trust’ that has developed over time.

But why is this so? I get that not everybody in business would claim to be a visionary or a movement maker. There are a lot of people who simply want to run a profitable business, pay their bills and look after their family. Everything else is a bonus or luxury item. And that is fine as far as it goes.

But it does not explain the decline of the trust factor. And in spite of internet technology making communication and global reach so much easier, trust is at an all-time low.

Slick marketing practices and tactics are more commonplace as companies try to salvage or maintain a competitive edge.

When I have experiences with poor customer service such as I did this week while dealing with domestic bill enquiries it seems to underline something fundamental for me that is commonly observed.

It appears that in the quest to achieve profitability certain values go by the wayside and many businesses forget the true purpose of business which is to solve a real problem or significantly improve a situation through product and service that is win-win for customer and company. An important part of that process is how businesses serve their customers and humanity.

It appears that many businesses are more concerned about selling their product as opposed to serving their prospects in the true sense through their product or service offering.

Raising the standard of living and the lives of people in the process should be core and is often lost in the quest for sales and profitability. It seems to be about how much money has been made rather than how people are served for the betterment of society.

Not long ago Forbes made a chilling prediction those people who ignore these things and fail to integrate serving humanity and raising lives into their practice may find themselves out of business in the next 7 years.

I had the privilege of co-hosting the strategic philanthropy global summit last year where Steve Farrell of Humanity’s Team was a guest speaker. Steve has been hugely successful as a business entrepreneur in Silicon Valley, and now leading a movement of Conscious Business Leaders to restore the true heart and soul of business.

In my years of coaching and mentoring, so many of my clients still struggle when it comes to speaking, as part of their business. I have watched people literally freeze and cringe in front of a camera. I have witnessed many avoiding video talk due to feeling intimidated by technology. Richard Branson once said ‘if you aren’t making a difference in other people’s lives you shouldn’t be in business -it’s that simple’

Many would agree with this perspective and yet it may be one that divides professionals in business at some level. The majority would agree that their product or service needs to tackle and resolve a problem that people are seeking a solution to. However, it’s how professionals operate that starts to expose some conflicts.

There are differing motivations and forms of approach out there in the business world. For some, they merely want to have the freedom to run their business successfully enough to pay the bills and have enough profit to service a lifestyle that looks after family beyond mere survival. Others want to make a boatload of money and be hugely successful, with a more lavish lifestyle.

Then there are those who are more purpose driven in that they care about humanity and the wider world and really seek to align their business with meeting those needs so the world can be a truly better place at all levels of operation.
Many of us have witnessed the good, the bad and the indifferent in business. Even good intentions in business practice can derail under pressure such as cash flow if left unchecked.

What has become more evident is that the practice of launching a product or service out there, followed by aggressive marketing and persuasion tactics to make the customer buy, is becoming less successful and more redundant. We cannot simply operate a business in a way that makes the customer fit our product.

The return to a more socially conscious approach to business is gaining traction and reaping lasting rewards. Forbes has recently warned that businesses who ignore a certain trend will not last beyond the next 4-7 years. So it would appear that critical re-evaluation is required to make sure we are truly serving those who seek our solution, and not the other way round.

Forbes was alluding to something that can be described as strategic philanthropy – combining making money through doing good. Of course this has many different expressions.

I recall when I first came across this expression in my mastermind group I was unclear as to its meaning. However, since childhood, I had been clear about wanting to deploy my gifts and talents in a way that could help humanity on a larger scale, particularly those who were stuck in survival issues.

But beyond spontaneous acts of giving and small projects along the way, I struggled to weave them both together for so many years, due to low income.

The idea of working simply to have a decent lifestyle and acquire material things for my own pleasure always felt short of appealing. People mattered to me more than things, but I did dream about having abundant resources so that I could contribute to humanity in a big way.

However as much as I got into structured giving such as sponsoring a child in Kenya and the Philippines for a few years, along with spontaneous acts of giving, I struggled with the money side of things, largely due to low income. I was by some descriptions a broke philanthropist.

My money story and struggles meant that there was always this glass ceiling in my mind just above my head, and for many years I felt trapped by that.It restricted my capacity to give.

I remember a few years ago listening to Angelina Jolie’s acceptance speech when given a humanitarian award. She spoke of two things – gratitude and pain. Her gratitude was that she considered herself fortunate to have grown up in an environment where she could discover and develop her gifts and talents; at the same time to use the resulting wealth to support her philanthropic desires, which go beyond merely giving money to support causes.

Her pain was that somewhere across the globe was a woman with similar gifts and talents, except that she lived in a refugee camp, with no voice to her name or roof over her head; for whom each day was about working out how to stay alive and keep her children alive.

When I heard this it made me cry because it spoke to a similar gratitude and pain that had been an undercurrent within me for so many years. However, my cultural and educational upbringing along with the many messages coming out of the church I attended at the time, such as money being the root of evil, rendered me in a state of constant conflict. Beyond being broke I felt that my dream was broken. Maybe you can relate.

But the dream never left me, and as I look back over the last 10 years I can see recall the turning point and processes that have brought me to where I am now. It has been fascinating to observe how I managed to evolve and close that gap significantly.

Like many business owners, I got stuck in a time for money trap with my coaching services, which limited the delivery of value, and whilst I have since rebranded, the real journey that prefaced this was so much deeper, and one of personal transformation based on acknowledging and building around core values in a deeper way.

Out of that, I have now birthed my own inspirational book Breaking Free. I also find myself co-hosting this year’s Strategic Philanthropy Global Summit with Tom Matzen, speaking with highly successful entrepreneurs who have learned to combine doing good with making money at the same time.

There were no coincidences in how this opportunity came to me. Furthermore, it has provided another platform from which to evaluate how I develop, shape and direct strategic philanthropy in my own business.

I recently attended a live event on strategic alliances where I learnt how this one strategy can create leverage in principle areas of time, money and influence.

The concept was not new to me, and formerly I had known it by the term joint ventures. Whilst I had a basic understanding of the power of strategic alliances I was troubled by one thing from experience.

My previous experiences of joint ventures had resulted in being exploited and left in the dust by unscrupulous individuals. I was left with the theory of everything and the substance of nothing. I confess this left me bruised and reticent about engaging with such a strategy.

However I had enough ‘process’ about me that I understood it was not the fault of the strategy. I needed to become more discerning where individuals were concerned. It could no longer be about people who were highly skilled, but those who combined it with a heart that genuinely wanted to serve.

Earlier this year I was introduced to a group of people who were setting their stall out differently – building strategic alliances within a ‘dolphin’ culture.

I was immediately drawn to this, yet knew that talk alone is cheap. So I decided to dip my toes in the water through their community and eventually immersed deeper, hence attending the live event in Las Vegas.

I have wondered for a long time what could be possible when people of heart and talent combine to help each other in business in a way that ensures all are winners, and having fun in the process.

What this group are answering for me so far is, what can happen in business when a group of heart-centred entrepreneurs come together in the spirit of high support and creativity, to empower each other to create deals.

They go beyond merely identifying individuals by matching list and product. This is not for entrepreneurs that simply want to be self-serving and take from others. I like that discernment. It allows genuine people with high value to rise.

One thing I would note though, is that when you start to play at a higher level, unresolved stuff will surface. That is just the nature of the beast and something that is often times overlooked. You may even experience the ‘diamonds in the rough’ scenario as you engage with a potential alliance.

However, for me the key is to embrace it and learn to dissolve this with an open heart and mind as well as a humble spirit. Ultimately I find that when I acknowledge and let go of the things that would hold me back, I feel liberated.

Some of the things I have learned so far is:-
1) How to make your product valuable and accessible
2) How to structure your programmes for better positioning and uptake
3) How to develop high value and trust relationships
4) How to develop online infrastructures to streamline and support product or service delivery
5) How to think creatively

Adversity is a subject that for many people represents unpleasant and uncomfortable thinking, because it usually involves looking at some trauma, grief, distressing or extremely challenging situation.

This can involve illness, injury, financial stress bereavement or family and relationship troubles to name a few. On the lower end of the scale it may cover struggles to bring about effective lifestyle changes, challenges with studying, teething problems in business, work or relocation.

Human nature is such that many tend to shrink in the face of challenge and adversity, and navigate it with baited breath. Unfortunately this approach can lead to a situation dragging out longer than necessary with accumulated excessive stress in the process.

This used to be my approach to challenges in my earlier years. I would get agitated, play out worse case scenarios in my mind, become distracted, and at times displace my stress onto others in an abrupt manner. Maybe you can relate.

So what is the key to dealing with adversity in a way that minimizes the unpleasant feelings and brings resolution in the best possible way.

The first thing is to look at what you are associating with adversity. You can do that by simply calling the things that come to mind when that word is mentioned. Usually stress, tension and anxiety will be common associations.

It becomes clear from the above scenario that in order to navigate adversity in a more empowered way, the perspective of adversity needs to change. So let me offer a few perspectives from what I discovered. Play with these to discover its truth for yourself.

1) Adversity is a part of life rather than an intrusion on life
2) Adversity is like a mirror reflecting back to you where you are at in terms of character, resilience and resourcefulness to name a few.
3) Adversity carries opportunity for inner growth
4) Adversity is like a friend in disguise, acting as a door opener toward success

Many who read the above may understand and agree in theory, but that theoretical understanding alone is not enough to bring about a positive change.

It is essential to experiment and give yourself an experience of those things in order to bring about significant and lasting change at root level. By way of example let’s take a look at the first one on the list above.

Football gave me an insight into this. I used to play in women’s football which is a physical contact sport in which you can get tackled legitimately or fouled against the rules. As it was part of the game I would get up quickly when fouled. The bigger aim was to score goals and win the match.

It helped me to understand that life is like a physical contact sport, in that it involves human touch, and events can occur that can knock us. Football served as an analogy to help me translate what I learnt on the football pitch into my life – adversity and challenges are a part of life not an intrusion.

When I translated this lesson across, everything changed in the way I perceived challenges and adversity. It dissolved my resistance and I met it head on, with my focus on the bigger picture, whilst extracting the gift and opportunities it bought for growth.

This then became a breeding ground from which I made discoveries about the other three points above, which I wrote about in my book Breaking Free. So find the experience or create the experience in your life that will allow you to discover these truths for yourself, and have fun in the process of creating that experience.

I was not surprised to read a recent newspaper article which cited a survey indicating that out of 2000 British people surveyed, the majority remained in fantasy mode about it. The wishful thinking averaged 2hrs a day and many dreamt of having a different lifestyle that would be healthier and more fulfilling. Definitions of that varied but included health, money, travel and career.

Alarmingly 80% of those surveyed admitted they were not living the life they truly desired. Even more shocking was the acknowledgement that by 32years of age they had given up on their dreams, and were living with regrets, as if their life was effectively over!

Although this was a small size study compared to the overall population the percentage of people writing off their dreams and living with regrets was very high. Throughout my coaching days I have witnessed more people than not who speak in such terms, as if life has dealt them a rotten hand of cards.

What I find sad is that the scenario described to me need not be the case. If you look around you at any object like a chair or a car, these things started off in the mind of man so to speak before they showed up in physical reality. They did not manifest out of nothing.

When I put this to many people they accept the concept. However when it comes to translating that concept to create a different reality in their lives, they falter in their acceptance. Why is this so?

It is one thing to accept that other people can produce a different reality through the creative use of imagination. It is another thing to believe that you can do it. This is a big gap I find in so many people.

The second observation I would make as to why people become somewhat paralysed when changing their reality is that their response reflects the conditioning of society and significant earlier experiences that have shaped them to think this way. They hold toxic beliefs that they are not good enough, worthy enough or lucky enough to have the life they desire.

By conditioned response I mean that someone could come up to you and prove something as true, yet you would still reject that truth. Take Christopher Columbus for example. He discovered that the world was round and scientifically proved it, yet it took a long time for the world to accept this as they had believed for so long that the world was flat. Such is the power of conditioning.

The good news is that it is possible to recondition yourself in support of your dreams. Much of my coaching is working with people at a deeper level of their being to awaken them to their true creative nature, so that they can mobilise the inner resources they already have to change their lives.

When I think back to where I was at 32years of age, life had dealt me a tragic set of cards that could have derailed me completely from the life I wanted. Somewhat ironically it was during those years and during the dark night of my soul that I awakened to what was inside me that could transform my life. My life is so different now.

It is somewhat ironic that adversity turned out to be the teacher that awoke me to my inner resources, and I share my discoveries in my book and song Breaking Free, to inspire and help you change the percentages of your dream life in your favour.
